South America

Throwing it back to my travels last summer! Last minute, I met my girlfriend who had been backpacking around South America for a month beforehand. My biggest regret was that I hadn't managed to go the whole hog with travelling.. However, that being said, it meant I felt it justifiable the last legs of the trip were done in style...

This was the first big trip I had had to travel alone. Not only that, the journey was horrendous; I travelled from London Heathrow to New York JFK, JFK to São Paulo then onto Iguazu Falls and finally to Rio De Janeiro.
The photos follow my travels beginning from flying into Foz do Iguaçu (The Brazilian side of the falls), travelling by car across to the Argentinan side; visiting the falls and then travelling on to Rio de Janiero. In the knowledge I would be moving round a lot, I didn't want to carry around my bulky DSLR due to weight and size as well being pretty sceptical having heard the horror stories of muggings and such like, so thought it best not to bring it. Therefore, I thought it was better to invest in something much cheaper, which would create a unique style of photo, whilst not compromising the quality.  After much deliberation, I chose the 35mm rangefinder Olympus XA. This was the first rangefinder camera I had ever used, which proved a challenge to focus initially, but I experimented with a roll of film prior to the travels to gain some good practice. This camera, and the photos produced, really established for me, a love and admiration for film that is ever-growing. Im looking forward to seeing what this summer has in store for me in terms of new film camera's and travels...
